Just sliced the Guanciale extra thin which will be placed under the breast skin of my Thanksgiving Capons! This will add a bit of flavoring as well as helping to preserve moisture in the breast meat.
The OSTBA slicer worked perfectly - - seamless and smooth results.
I have had a couple of cheaper models in the past for home use that I ended up throwing away....cutting with a knife was quicker and had better results than the discount store slicers.....This one is much closer to commercial models and serves me well for household use, .I especially like that it doesn't have a weak and flexible backing plate that immediately precedes the blade....the cheap models backing plate was so flimsy it would gap open close to the blade and you could not get thin cuts which is the only reason I like meat slicers.....with this one I can get thin cuts like I like....good value for household use that actually works, it is small enough to store under cabinet, and the thickness adjustment give you thick to thin.....I like to cool the meat in the refrigerator for best performance on the slicer.
As a retired executive chef that also had experience as a delicatessen manager it was hard to give up my 14 Berkel slicer but my wife thought it was overkill for the two of us. living without a slicing machine would have been unbearable so after research I settled for A 7.5 Ostba meat slicer.
This was a very well made machine for the priceeasy to clean, easy to store and for small cuts did a good job. Unfortunately a 7.5 blade is too small for many slicing projects.
So when the 8.75 Ostba was offered I switched machines. The 20% difference in size made big difference in the ability to cut more items albeit its not a 14 350 1/2 hp machine.
Excellent deal for the price the 8.75 Ostba slicer is a great home tool. Easy to clean and store. Drawbacks blade still a little small and no sharpener but the next upgrade is about $175 more. Wish it had more power.
Love this machine. Works well and easy to clean.
Highly recommend.
Wife loves it and so do I
This machine meets my needs
I have sliced cabbage, bacon tomatoes and lettuce so far.
Get this instead of the model below. The smaller model is very slow and really seems to have to work hard to slice home made bread. This model is better, but still has 'last slice' issues where it gets caught in the gap. The 'guide' should be something better designed than a motor housing.
Good quality, works great. I have been slicing meat for jerky and sandwiches. Great value for the price. It is very stable on the counter, it doesn't slip. Blades are sharp and cut cleanly. Safety features are great. It's easy to use and clean up is quick and simple.
The meat grip, the plastic slide with the cleats needs to be more substantial. It's very easy to clean the blade is safely removed. The guard behind the blade has five screws that are number 15 torx head that are easily removed for cleaning. The entire meat tray and slide come off by opening one clip. I sliced 7 lb of pork belly bacon in 15 minutes with considerable ease. The motor did feel warm but there were over a hundred slices of bacon when finished.
I use it mostly for slicing my home made sourdoughs. But I also used it to slice up a roast for luncheon meet. It worked great for both. Great for home use.
Excellent! Easy to use and clean up is a breeze! It's not too heavy to get out when needed.
Great buy for the money! Wish it had a setting for thickness of slices as I can't remember what I used each time before. Other than that, great!
Got it to slice home-made bread. Works great, but you need to lubricate the back of the blade to keep it from friction noises when running
I bought this because I had a Romanian salami hanging in the basement for eight months, and I could not cut it manually. I used it for tongue and corned beef first, because I was expecting it to burn out when I tried it on the salami, which was hard enough to drive a nail into pine. It worked. Slowly, but it worked- and the slices went 'clink' when they fell into the tray. I was very pleasantly surprised.
I have now used this slicer for about 3 weeks. I purchased it primarily to slice home made sour dough bread, but I also wanted to use it to slice deli meats. The only small issue I had with it, and not worth a negative, is that I broke the plastic pusher used to hold the item while slicing it. I broke it, but in the defense of the manufacturer, they had a warning not to press too hard on it and if you broke it,, to let them know immediately and they would replace it which they did in just 2 days.
As for how well it works, for the prices, its size/weight, motor power, torque, and blade velocity is more than sufficient. If you need an industrial grade slicer, you can spend $1200 on one, but this one for under $150 is very sufficient for home use. I have used an industrial, restaurant quality slicer and I now the difference and it is substantial, but with that said. I still believe this slicer is a good purchase.
It slices bread effortlessly using the serrated blade and also, having ham and Turkey chilled to just above freezing, it sliced it very thin (basically shaved) easily. I have not tried roast beef yet, but I will do that next.
Cleaning is simple with a quick, but secure means to remove the gear driven blade. Care should always be taken when handling the blade, so I would recommend purchasing a Kevlar glove. The slicer is very safe to operate as it requires a dual operation to start the blade and only one button press to stop it. It adjusts to a closed position so the blade edge is flush with the adjacent surface so it is safe wot store when not in use. The thickness adjustment has a tactile click and stays in place during use to maintain the slice thickness. I highly recommend this slicer to others if you have a light duty hope use need. Its size and weight also makes it easy to store on a shelf. I store mine in my garage, but when I get more counter space, I will keep it set up for continuous use.
Very pleased with this slicer. I used on semi frozen and thawed meat and worked great on both. Does not slide when using. Mainly use to slice meat to make jerky.
I was close to returning this right away. I was put off by its slow rotation speed, though I realize Im used to belt?driven machines. I decided to try it anyway and was pleasantly surprised, it slices really well, even through half?frozen items, and produces fairly consistent results.
That said, I wouldnt recommend it for anyone using a slicer more than once a week. The gears are plastic, and I worry theyll wear out over time. But if youre looking for an inexpensive slicer for occasional use, this one works just fine. Its also easy to clean, light enough to move into storage comfortably, yet heavy enough that it stays in place during use.
I acquired the OSTBA Electric Meat Slicer and have been using it regularly in my kitchen. Overall, it has been a useful addition for preparing a variety of foods at home.
It has steady power for slicing meats, cheeses, and even bread. Ive used it to slice leftover turkey, and it produced even, sandwich-ready slices with minimal effort. Its been a great way to save money by limiting food waste, since I can easily turn leftovers into deli-style portions for lunches. Ive also been able to take advantage of large pieces of meat at a reduced cost, slicing them at home for different uses throughout the week.
The adjustable thickness control (0C15mm) is straightforward to use and allows for flexibility depending on what Im preparingthin slices for sandwiches or thicker cuts for recipes. The two removable 8.7 stainless steel blades are convenient, and I appreciate that they can be taken off for cleaning. The included food tray and hand grip help keep things stable during operation.
In terms of performance, it handles most foods well, though it works best when meats are well chilled and firm. Softer items may require a slower, more careful approach. The unit does take up some counter and storage space, so its something to consider if kitchen space is limited. Cleaning requires a bit of attention due to the number of parts, but the removable components make it manageable.
Overall, this slicer has been a practical tool for home meal prep. It offers good versatility and helps reduce waste while making it easier to portion meats and other foods to suit different meals.
Been making home made bacon and I retired my old slicer. This is much better
We decided to purchase a slicer and buy meat and cheese in bulk to save $'s over the grocery store prices. Figured we would pay for the slicer in about a year. Never purchased or used a slicer -- did some research and decided on this slicer as it was about middle of the road dollar wise. Used the slicer now to slice up about 30 lbs of various meats and about 15 lbs of cheese. Slicer works well and cleans up easily in that it comes apart enough to allow access to various parts / areas. I selected this slicer for the thickness adjustment method which is high up on the backing plate vs others -- it was a good choice. The handle on the pusher plate was also a good selection choice. The literature with the slicer sucks and isn't very helpful, but researching what others have discovered is helpful. Whatever you order, also order some food grade mineral oil and grease to lubricate the blade for cutting cheeses and to grease the plastic gears. The literature does NOT mention any of this or any suggested maintenance. For middle of the road quality - I would purchase again.
great slicer it works well
Dreamy sliver, we bought a replacement for the one we previously purchased because the thickness dial didnt work. VERY PLEASED with this one, the thickness dial is easy to operate and the blades change out with ease.
What a fantastic easy to use machine. I was thrilled what a great job it does.
So far only used it once, but that one use did meet my expectations easy to use and clean.. with many needed safety features.
